PHOTOS FOR US

A Mother and Daughter live on opposite sides of the earth. Both will celebrate a milestone age in their life during 2010. This blog will be their story for the next year, photographs of what they see, feel, love or hate.

These are their lives...

Wednesday 29 September 2010

A never ending row of juice.

View to the west from the roof of my office, lovely old buildings and in the distance the London Eye.

Tuesday 28 September 2010

Rain rain go away... actually don't we need it! Severe weather warnings were issued this afternoon.

I thought of so many funny comments for this but I am going to let this picture of Gus speak for itself.

Monday 27 September 2010

Melted chocolate with fruit and marshmallows on the side to dip in it... mmmm...heaven.
Recipe courtesy of Vic.

My dear little Canon Ixus 30 camera that up to today has taken all my pictures on this blog. I have used this for just over five years and it has recorded holidays, weddings, parties, happy occasions and cats. It is not broken, just a bit old. I will keep it as my 'spare'.

Sunday 26 September 2010

A staple of the Australian diet ... snags and rissoles.

Crane flies, 'Daddy Log Legs' ...its that time of year when they are hatching. This one has just 'hatched' from the grass. I want to know why? What purpose are they in the grand scheme of things?

Saturday 25 September 2010

It rained on the way home from dinner tonight. This is a leaf on the palm tree outside our house.

Our local pub had a beer & cider festival this weekend. Old Rosie cider 7.3% abv was my favourite.

Friday 24 September 2010

We went to some friends for dinner this evening. The hostess had spent the day cooking us a five course meal!
  • Cappuccino of mushroom
  • Smoked salmon and avocado mousse with horseradish mayo
  • Pimms sorbet
  • Quail wrapped with prosciutto and stuffed with prune, apple and wild rice, served with parmasan parsnips on a potatoe rossti,
  • Chocolate custard on a chocolate sponge topped with home made orange jelly with cointreau oranges.

Everyone mouthful was delicious. If I could cook just one of those courses... I would be so proud.

Security camera. Had great fun taking a picture of this as it is a highly secure building. I spent the rest of the day wondering if 'they' would come to arrest me!

Another day another book... I read A LOT !

Three things about The Monument that commemorates the Great Fire of London 1666

1. It was designed by Sir Christopher Wren
2. It took 6 years to build from 1671- 1677
3. It is 202 feet high

It has recently been renovated and looks wonderful. One day I might climb to the top!

Wednesday 22 September 2010

There is a little girl in England that very nearly didn't get sent a birthday present today !!! I became rather attached too the pink sparkly bow! (Thanks Hayley for helping with the photo.) (Yes mum - I pressed the button).

For the first time since starting this blog, I forgot to take my camera with me this morning. Panic. Anyhow all was well, when I got home this evening the sun was still shining and this candle and tea light holders were catching the last rays.

Tuesday 21 September 2010

The colour of this bottle brush flower hasn't really been done justice by this photo.

Shop window in Leadenhall Street, London. Used to be 'The Officers Club' a gents outfitters. It has been closed for a while now and obviously the dummies have been left to fend for themselves!

Monday 20 September 2010

Tea is my favourite drink. And this is my favourite mug to drink it from.

What you need to commute, rucksack, train season ticket, umbrella (always), purse, book, so you can read a chapter before you fall asleep, mobile, to phone your loved ones to tell them that the train is running late, Evening Standard in the evening so you can do the sudoku on the way home, sunglasses, because you manage to sit in the seat that gets the sun straight in the eyes! Pashmina 'cause they only put the heating on in the summer.
The Fan to cool you when the heating is on, the pen for the sudoku, the bottle of water, the hand sanitizer, the hair brush and mirror all declined to be photographed.

One of the 5 anchors from the HMS Sirius at the Australian Maritime Museum, Sydney. Sirius was the flagship of the first fleet of convict transports to East Australia and was captained by Arthur Phillip - the penal settlements first Governor. During her life she circumvented the world until she was blown onto a reef and wrecked. Her untimely demise, left the fledgling colony with very little contact with the outside world: she had been the main supply ship traveling regularly, to and from South Africa, London and China.

A real cop-out today, this is a photo of the TV screen! It was the Great North Run today, I always love those pictures of the 'masses' all running. I wondered what a picture from the TV would look like, well here it is.

Look what was above the clouds at Uluru...

Rudbeckia fulgida var. deamii, as you may be able to tell I have been on a course today, at Beth Chatto's garden, about how to name plants. What would appear to be yellow petals are in fact a sort of leaf, the flowers (and there are hundreds of them, all really small) are the darker centres.

Friday 17 September 2010

Believe it or not this is Uluru. Walking around the base in the rain and wind took us 3 hours. This part of Australia has been in drought for 9 years - I guess we were lucky to have seen the red centre during this sort of weather.

Iconic Australia, Iconic London, Tower Bridge with HMS Belfast on the river Thames. Not sure what the other battleship was doing there, perhaps just visiting.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY ANDREA. WELCOME TO OUR BLOG!

My first post ... I've been looking forward to this for months.
I thought I'd start with a photo of just some of the lovely presents that I was given for my birthday. I opened them on the balcony of our hotel room over looking Uluru with a glass of champagne in hand.

'Somewhere over the rainbow'

I am so glad Andrea has joined this blog, I was getting lonely.

Wednesday 15 September 2010

Our hens have arrived, at long last, they are lovely.

Tuesday 14 September 2010

My African Violet, it is over 8 years old, has only been re potted once, rarely fed and only watered once a week. It sits on a window sill in my office, never gets the sun. It is always in flower.

Monday 13 September 2010

Marbles, in case you loose them!

Sunday 12 September 2010

There is something magical about a horse chestnut seed.

Saturday 11 September 2010

Got cows as a view from my kitchen window today!

Friday 10 September 2010

Nice to go away so you can come home.

Thursday 9 September 2010

Lobster pots at Seahouses. Went here over 30 years ago and there were lots of 'smoke houses' selling kippers which were delicious. Arrived here to be greeted by the worst sort of 'progress', gift shops selling tat, fish & chip shops, crazy golf (there is a place for everything....but not here!) and not a smoke house in sight. The attraction of this place now is that you can book boat trips to the Farne Islands to see Seals & Puffins.

Wednesday 8 September 2010

The Falkirk Wheel, turning.

Tuesday 7 September 2010

Flag Locker, Royal Yacht Britannia, Leith

Monday 6 September 2010

One'o'clock gun at Edinburgh Castle, picture taken at 12.40 p.m. At 1 p.m. BANG!

Sunday 5 September 2010

Drove today from Newcastle to Edinburgh, stopping at Alnwick for lunch. Lots of historically interesting photo opportunities....then I saw this suit in a shop window, the trim was pale pink and what was even more amazing was they were selling matching boots. It was beautifully made, couldn't see the price tag. Who would wear this? I cannot imagine.

Saturday 4 September 2010

The Millennium Bridge in Gateshead, being raised. Amazing!

Friday 3 September 2010

A long road trip to Newcastle today, too many lorries, too many roadworks, too much traffic. This bed looked so inviting by the time we got there.

Thursday 2 September 2010

I love this case, when everyone is deciding at the airport carousel which case is theirs, I always know which one is mine. I have never seen a similar one. This time it won't be flying.

Wednesday 1 September 2010

An old rusty ladder leaning up against the shed, all covered in weeds and long grass. There is a lot to be said for not keeping a pristine garden.............rabbits live under the shed and frogs and toads live round about.

Tuesday 31 August 2010

Bear & Schmoo. Bear came from New England and Schmoo......, I will never know how 'the girls' got a large stuffed cow past me and managed to bring it home from Florida, only to give it to me as a birthday present! Thanks girls, Schmoo always brings a smile to my face.

Monday 30 August 2010

Sunday roast.....yeah OK I know it was a Monday but it still tasted good.
