The Shard. London Bridge station. This is going to be one of the tallest buildings in Europe and will look like a shard of glass. It is growing so fast. They are already putting the glass windows in at the bottom of the building. The smaller tower next to it is Guys hospital. As you can see by the sky, summer has ended!

Now this is bonkers! These are some gates near where I work. The land beyond the gates is concreted and occasionally used as a car park. Underneath the concrete is supposed to be a burial pit that was used for the dead from the Plague and for prostitutes that frequented the Globe theatre (which isn't far away) in the 17th century. Some local 'historian' has set this up as a shrine to the prostitutes and all sorts of tat is tied to the gate. Bits of ribbon with names on, Christmas decorations, plastic flowers and at night sometimes candles are lit. Its now on the tourist trail! In the background you can see the Shard which is going to be the tallest building in Europe.....when it is finished.

London on full visible alert today, the fifth anniversary of the 7/7 bombings. So here's to all the Rescue Services, the Doctors and Nurses who dealt with the injured, the passers by that helped and most importantly the People who lost their lives or were injured on that terrible Thursday. It was an odd day for those of us working in London, first a report, around 9 a.m. of a train crash at Aldgate and then as the next hour unfolded it was obvious that bombs had gone off at various places all over London. The police told everyone to stay at work as transport systems stopped but by 3 p.m. there was a slow trail of everyone walking, mainly in silence, to their mainline stations. We were then filtered into the station, every so often someone being stopped and searched. It took me several hours to get home that day and the next day London was closed. I have been in London on several occasions when bombs have gone off, but you carry on with your life and roll the dice once more!Tuesday 6 July 2010
